Advent at St. Paul’s

Welcome to the Season of Advent, and Happy Church New Year!! Yes, the season of  Advent marks the beginning of our new church year (Year C). “Advent” comes from the Latin word “adventus,” meaning arrival or coming. During the next four Sundays before Christmas, we are invited to observe Advent as a period of anticipation, preparation, and self-reflection as we await the birth of Jesus Christ.

Our altar frontal and coverings switch from the color green (the season after the day of Pentecost) to blue, and an Advent wreath is displayed with four candles representing the four weeks of Advent. The candles represent hope, peace, joy, and love. And when we light these candles each week, it symbolizes the light of Christ coming into the world.

This year, our theme for Advent is Words for the Beginning (sources: A Sanctified Art). In our daily life and work, filled with endings and beginnings, we need reminders. We need words that anchor us as we journey the path unknown. During this season of Advent, may you find words that embody belovedness, hope, peace, joy, and love. May you find words for beginning again. Prayers ascending for a blessed holy Advent. For Advent resources, please reach out to Amanda at office@stpaulsmp.org.
